How do I become a Jeenie Linguist?

  1. Register and create your profile here.
  2. Become qualified in our system.
  1. Confirm your level of language proficiency and other acceptance criteria.
  2. Conduct three (3) unpaid customer engagements during an initial trial period and receive satisfactory customer ratings. Each unpaid engagement must last a minimum of 10 minutes.
  3. Be prepared to interview with a Jeenie staff member in any of your selected languages, if requested.
  1. After you are qualified, set your Jeenie availability to ON according to your own schedule.

Jeenie reserves the right to accept or reject applicants based on information provided.

When will I be contacted for an engagement?

Jeenie will notify you via email of upcoming events that will require assistance in your language combination. At that time, you will have the option to sign up to work as a Linguist during these events. To start receiving customer requests, simply set your Jeenie availability to ON. We will provide you with instructions on how to do this.


How do I accept or reject a customer call?

How many engagements can I accept?

You can accept only one engagement at a time. After your call ends with a customer, you will be immediately eligible for another customer request as long as your Jeenie availability is set to ON.

What can I expect from a customer call?

Jeenie will send you a customer request in advance of the call, describing the nature of the call, including the customer’s language, location, type of situation, urgency and more. You always have the option to accept or reject a call request. However, keep in mind that rejecting multiple requests may result in your losing queuing status. Once you accept a request, the call will be directed to you. If you frequently reject requests, you may be contacted by a Jeenie representative.

As soon as the call is connected, always introduce yourself in the language of the customer. For example: “Hello, my name is (your name). I am your Jeenie Linguist in (mention the languages that you plan to help with). How can I help you today?”

What is the best situation for me to accept a call?

When you accept a request for a call, make sure you are in environment with no audio or visual interference and you have good smartphone connectivity. Once you accept a call request, stop everything else you are doing and focus completely on the customer for the duration of the call. If you can’t guarantee a suitable environment for the call, reject the request and wait for the next one.

How does Jeenie select Linguists for a call?

The Jeenie system uses a sophisticated and proprietary algorithm and queuing system to match your profile with customer requests. Matching criteria include the time you logged in, your customer ratings, period of availability, language proficiency, location, areas of expertise, and more. Linguists with the highest match percentage will be contacted first for an engagement.

Linguists who log in earliest are prioritized in the queue for incoming requests.

How much will I be paid for an engagement?

Jeenie Linguists are paid by the minute during a live customer call for the full length of the customer call. For upcoming projects, Jeenie will reach out to you to let you know how much each project will pay per minute. You may then decide if you want to sign up as a Linguist for each project. Remember: you don’t need to travel to work or to incur the cost of a car, fuel, or car insurance! For high-demand periods of surge activity, Jeenie will notify you of increases in the amount of money per minute you can earn. All earned money will be deposited into your Paypal account, as described elsewhere.

Are there scenarios in which I will not get paid?

As part of your qualification to become a Jeenie Linguist, you agree to a trial period during which you conduct three unpaid (3) customer calls, each at least 10 minutes long, and receive satisfactory customer ratings. You will not be paid for these three calls during your trial period. As long as you receive satisfactory ratings from customers, you will be eligible for paid engagements those first three unpaid calls.

At any time, even after your trial period, if your customer ratings do not remain at a satisfactory level, Jeenie reserves the right to suspend your Linguist activities.

On every call, customers have the option to disconnect before the end of two minutes (120 seconds) for no fee if they are dissatisfied with a Linguist’s language skills or professionalism. If a customer disconnects their call with you for these reasons, you will not be paid for the call. If you disagree with the customer’s claim of dissatisfaction, you may request that Jeenie review the recorded call to determine if the customer’s allegations were warranted. How do I receive payment?

On or before the last day of each month, Jeenie will transfer payment for the amount of money you earned during the previous month to your PayPal account, along with a detailed statement of the engagements you accepted and the call times. So, for example, money earned for the month of February will be deposited to your account on or before March 31.

Am I a Jeenie employee?

No. You are an independent contractor working on a part-time basis at a location and during times that you set yourself. This means that you are self-employed and are responsible for any income and employment taxes, government withholdings and contributions. Jeenie does not withhold any taxes from your earnings. Depending on your country of residence and earnings during the year, you may receive a year-end tax statement from Jeenie. For more information, consult your tax advisor.

Will Jeenie send me documents for my tax filings?

Will Jeenie pay for my mobile phone or usage?

No. To work as a Jeenie Linguist, you must have a smartphone with an appropriate talk/data plan and connectivity. All costs for your purchasing and maintaining your phone and plan are your own responsibility.

How are Linguists rated by customers?

After each call, customers are prompted to rate the overall call performance on a scale of 1 (worst) to 5 (best) stars. Customers are also prompted to comment on what they liked – such as your professionalism, friendliness, knowledge – and what they did not. Customer ratings become part of Jeenie’s matching algorithm; the better your ratings, the more likely you are to be selected for future engagements. At any time, even after your trial period, if your customer ratings do not remain at a satisfactory level, Jeenie reserves the right to suspend your Linguist activities. Jeenie may reach out to you about improving the areas in which you have received lower ratings.

Can I rate the customer, too?

Yes, we will be instituting a rating system for Linguists to evaluate customers as well. More details on this will be forthcoming soon.

What if I have a problem during an engagement?

How do I discontinue working as a Jeenie Linguist?

If you do not want to be called for any Jeenie engagements, simply set your availability in the Jeenie app to OFF. You can always restart working as a Jeenie Linguist by setting your availability to ON again.

How can I increase the number of requests I am selected for?

The Jeenie system uses a sophisticated and proprietary algorithm to match your profile with customer requests. Matching criteria include the time you logged in, your customer ratings, period of availability, language proficiency, location, areas of expertise, and more. To increase the number of requests you are selected for, try setting your Jeenie availability to ON more often and for longer periods of time. And always make sure you are delighting your customers every time with high-quality language assistance!

Why am I not getting any Jeenie call requests?

How can I fix sound issues?

It is important to get Jeenie notifications and to hear your customer properly. Notification and audio issues depend on many variables, including device settings and operating systems. If you are having notification or audio issues, here are some options to try:

Do I need any particular experience or expertise to be a Jeenie Linguist?

Jeenie Linguists are multilingual individuals who have acquired language skills in various ways: by birth and upbringing, by family or heritage, by education and training, and more. Your language skills in both your Native and Secondary languages should be such that you are comfortable in most situations and topics. To be a Jeenie Linguist you do not need to have formal training as a translator or interpreter, but many of our Linguists do. When you register in the Jeenie system, make sure you identify only those languages as your Secondary Language in which you truly feel comfortable speaking, solving problems and interpreting.

If the conversation during a Jeenie call becomes too difficult for your level of proficiency or you have other language difficulties, politely end the call and ask the customer to submit a request for a new Linguist. At the end of the call, use the in-app problem-reporting feature to report the problem. Your status will not be penalized for being honest about your capabilities and limitations.
