Hear It From Yuliana
Yuliana is a professional Russian interpreter with 15+ years of experience in the industry! Yuliana’s journey as a professional interpreter began as an ESL teacher, when there was an urgent need, but no one available – so she accommodated the request.
Russian is an East Slavic language spoken primarily in Russia. Russian is the most spoken native language in Europe, and it is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Jeenie is proud to offer on-demand languages like Russian.
Yuliana took the time to share some of her personal insights gained from her years of interpreting experience, along with advice for aspiring interpreters. Take a look!
What started you on the path to becoming an interpreter?
I worked as an ESL teacher, and there was an urgent need, and no one was available. I accommodated that request; interim helped them with some organizational moments. I learned something new and felt that the role of an interpreter fits perfectly my personality perfectly.
What do you find the most rewarding part of being an interpreter?
The most rewarding part of being an interpreter for me is the transformative power of communication, where language ceases to be a barrier and becomes a bridge for connection, empathy, and mutual understanding among people of all backgrounds, seeing happiness and satisfaction when all parties hear and understand each other make this reward complete.
Can you share a story where you felt you really made a difference when interpreting?
Once I was rendering a simultaneous interpretation of some negotiations, leaving the booth upon completion I saw one of my clients, and he said that the moment he had recognized my voice in the headphones, he relaxed and was 100% sure that not a single detail would be missed.
What advice do you have for someone interested in becoming an interpreter?
First and most important I believe one should master the language, by expanding the knowledge base and vocabulary, exploring various cultures, and being open to new things.
How do you like to spend your time when not interpreting?
I enjoy cooking and listening to podcasts.
What qualities do you think make someone a great interpreter?
The role of an interpreter combines several qualities and skills, one of the most important are language proficiency and critical thinking. Then, cultural competency and emotional resilience, and of course clear communication.

I have translated 50 Hr of practical pilot training in the air.
How many languages do you speak? How did you learn them?
I speak Russian and English fluently, but if needed, I can pull out more from my memory, like French, Turkish or Ukrainian.
