Testimonials

Hmong language experts & cultural ambassadors

Jeenie interpreters are more than linguists, they help others to navigate cultural differences and understand unique tonal and visual cues that non-native speakers often miss. They’re communication experts.

About the Hmong language

The Hmong language belongs to the Hmong-Mien language family and is spoken by millions of people across Southeast Asia, particularly in Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and China. The language is known for its complexity, with multiple dialects and a tonal structure that can change the meaning of words depending on pitch.

Although Hmong has a rich oral tradition, its written form is relatively new, developed in the 1950s by missionary and linguist William Smalley using the Roman alphabet. Hmong speakers have a long history of migration and adaptation, as many were displaced due to war and political instability, particularly during and after the Vietnam War.

Today, the language serves as a vital means of cultural preservation for Hmong communities, especially among diaspora populations in the United States, where over 300,000 Hmong speakers now reside.

Hmong Culture and recent history

Hmong culture is deeply rooted in family, spirituality, and respect for ancestral traditions. One key cultural concept is “Qeej”, the traditional Hmong instrument that symbolizes the voice of the ancestors and is used in ceremonies to guide souls. Music, storytelling, and oral history play vital roles in passing down traditions across generations.

The Hmong are known for their close-knit family structures and their emphasis on respect for elders and communal well-being. This is reflected in the Hmong New Year, a time for families to reunite, honor their ancestors, and celebrate with music, dancing, and feasts. Hmong communities, particularly in the U.S., have faced challenges with integration, identity preservation, and cultural misunderstanding.

Despite these struggles, Hmong people continue to thrive, with recent movements emphasizing the importance of cultural recognition and the preservation of language. The resilience of the Hmong people—rooted in their traditions of respect, family, and spirituality—remains a cornerstone of their identity in both their native lands and diaspora communities worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Across the industry, Karen interpreting is typically charged on a per minute rate. With Jeenie, our rates are some of the best in the industry. Your per minute rate will depend on which Jeenie plan you have. See our Pricing page for more details.

Note: Jeenie offers the same rate for Video and Audio-only. Why?
Because we know that video sessions get better outcomes. Video captures non-verbal cues (75% – 93% of most interactions) – making it more efficient and more effective in critical interactions.

We get this question a lot.

Hmong interpreters help with spoken interactions. They are present in-the-moment to help people with different languages to communicate (Hmong into English and English into Hmong). Interpreters also serve as communication and are experts at culture nuance. They help to ensure that both parties understand each other.

Hmong translators help with written documents. Translators convert written text into the needed language.

Jeenie attracts the best interpreters in the world. Truly. We constantly hear from clients that they have NEVER had such amazing interpreters on other services. That skill saves our clients time and minimizes their risk of costly miscommunications. Here’s how we excel at quality:

We treat interpreters well.
Jeenie offers linguists great compensation (often the best in the industry), work-life flexibility, ongoing learning to improve their craft, and our heart-felt respect. For this and many other reasons, the best interpreters want to be on the Jeenie platform.

We have extremely high standards.
Unlike most of our competitors who outsource huge chunks of their interpreting needs, Jeenie has created a vetted network of global talent who are active within our platform. This gives us direct oversight on quality and skills assessment. Jeenie interpreters must pass our rigorous skills evaluations, have several years of experience, maintain 4.0 average client rating, and pass ongoing quality tests.
