Performative Assessment of Medical Interpreting Skill

Real-World Medical Scenarios

Setup: Authentic medical scenarios
Timeline: 25 minutes

Candidates navigate authentic medical situations with actors performing as both medical professionals and as patients with Low English Proficiency (LEP).

For authenticity and cultural relevance, test scenarios are developed with healthcare professionals and verified by highly experienced medical interpreters.

Task:
The test-taker must accurately interpret within the allotted time in each segment. Results are evaluated by a medical interpreter who has passed a course to ensure they have expert command of our performance rubric.

Scenario
Specialties

Specialties include: Psychotherapy, oncology, antenatal care, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology, gastroenterology, general surgery, pediatrics, endocrinology, and orthopedics.

Assessment
Criteria

The test challenges applicants to demonstrate critical interpreting sub-skills such as bilingual mastery of medical terminology, working memory capacity, note-taking skills, meaning precision and utterance completeness.

Our
Rubric

An assessment is only as good as the tool used to evaluate performance. Our rubric evaluates the diverse aspects of spoken communication for meaning "accuracy.”
